BELMOPAN, Belize – The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise has received a tractor with forage harvester, a used four-wheel drive Mitsubishi pickup truck and other agricultural implements from the Embassy of the Republic from China (Taiwan) to Belize.
The donation was facilitated by the Sheep and Goat Production Guidance and Production System Improvement Project (Sheep Project Phase II) and will be used at the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center (NSGBC) at Central Farm .
The tractor and combine harvester combined with attachments for bush, plow and harrow, hole drill, front loader and a 16ft trailer have a combined value of BZ $ 143,625 and are among the results obtained under the sheep project phase II. This very successful phase of the project will improve the harvest of grass and fodder to feed the 400 head of sheep and goats of the NSGBC. It will also improve the production of forage corn silage to meet the nutritional needs of sheep productivity.
Another notable result to be achieved later this year is the construction of another modern barn measuring 60 feet by 135 feet to create the space needed to accommodate more imported farm sheep and goats.
HE David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), presented the donation to Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, and Servulo Baeza, Director General of the Ministry . Andrew Harrison, Director of Agriculture, oversaw the purchasing process and inspecting the equipment to make sure everything was in good working order.
Phase II of the sheep project includes a budget of $ 3 million for implementation over four years ending in March 2024. The objectives are, among other things, to continue to help farmers improve the quality of their sheep and goats. ; conduct market research and value chain analysis to promote consumption and market penetration of sheep and goat products; and strengthen the sheep and goat traceability system to improve the efficiency of the value chain.
The Government of Taiwan reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting the Government of Belize through the successful implementation of the Sheep and Goat Production System Improvement and Guidance Project in order to realize the production potential and the expansion of Belize’s industry.
